The people of the Huli clan live in the Hela province and the southern highlands of Papua New Guinea, the third largest island in the world, inhabited by one of the most extraordinary biodiversities on the planet. The Huli people believe they are descended from a male ancestor named "Huli", who was the first to cultivate the Huli ancestral land. The people of Huli believe in many different spirits they call the damia; these spirits inhabit the sky, rivers, forest and mountains and have complete control over the land, climate, soil fertility and livestock.

The traditional costume of the Huli is considered the most colorful in the country. Men of Huli tribes are known to spend a lot of time decorating their body, face and hair. The striking yellow-red facial coloring is one of the best-known landmarks of the Huli men. Ocher (red clay) and Ambua (yellow clay) are sacred, traditional coloring materials used for painting the face. The upper part of the face is painted yellow, while the lower part is painted red. The combination of these two colors creates an incredible, unique contrast that appears astonishingly beautiful and powerful to the men of the Huli people. Besides the painting of the body, the wigs are the real eye-catchers of the traditional Huli costume. The main reason for the tribe's obsession with wigs is the initiation rituals that take place when boys are 14 or 15 years old. During that period, boys are taught to take care of their hair with special procedures that make the hair grow strong, thick, and long, eventually taking the shape of a mushroom that is later shaved off several times and used to make the traditional wigs. The wigs are accentuated with different elements such as animal fur, plants and feathers, which in turn creates an extraordinary, powerful and beautiful look.

The unique appearance, colors and traditions of the Huli people inspired the design of the Monteverde USA® Huli pen collection. Note: The JoWo Omniflex nib is a flexible nib that provides bounce and softness when writing. You can achieve some line variation with a little extra downforce, up to a point. It is recommended to bend the nib to about twice the line thickness you get when you don't apply pressure. Avoid pressing too hard on the nib, as bending too much can prevent the teeth from fully returning to their original position, which can reduce or stop ink flow.
