Pelikan Fountain Pen Souverän M900 - Toledo Black

Imagine a technique going back thousands of years, transforming steel and iron into works of art. The process is fascinating: patterns are carefully engraved into the surface, then a thin layer of gold is applied and worked into the pattern with a small hammer. The steel is then heated to about 800°C. The surface oxidizes and turns black, while the gold begins to shine. This enchanting technique traveled with the Arabs to Spain and was perfected over the years, mainly in the famous city of Toledo.

In 1931, Pelikan decided to apply this technique to its Toledo model. It was such a success that the design was hardly changed over the years. Nowadays the decorative holder is made of Sterling silver. This is carefully worked until the pattern is covered with a layer of gold (or palladium for a silver surface).

Each Toledo fountain pen is a unique work of art, made in Germany. The engravings in the motif are applied by hand, bringing each pelican feather to life. Due to the time-consuming manual work, a maximum of 200 pieces are made per month. The cap, front and back piece are made of superior quality black resin.
