In 1911, the "Sakata-Manufactory" was founded by Sakata and his brother with the production of solid gold nibs. In 1917, the Hamadacho factory moved and the company name changed to "Sailor Pen Sakata-Manufactory Co., Ltd," and fountain pens were added to their production. The company reached a turning point on May 27, 1926 when Prince Imperial Hirohito visited the factory. This was a great honor for a small company and The Sailor Pen fame.
Shortly after World War II, Sailor was the first in Japan to launch ballpoint pens, which became a major trend.
